Lease Negotiation - Tips And Guidelines

Before you begin the lease negotiation, it is essential to ask questions to the landlord. In fact, asking questions is a way to show the landlord that you are keen to follow all the rules.

Following are a few tips and guidelines to be followed after you are done with asking all your questions:

You should start negotiating only after you are done with reading the lease and asking your questions to the landlord.

You should have a clear idea about what you want to change and why. For instance, if you feel that the quoted rent is high and not reasonable, you can ask for a lower rent.

While negotiating a lease, if you realize that the ceiling is leaking or the apartment needs other necessary renovations, ask for a guarantee that it will be fixed within a week. Neglectful landlords can give you a lot of trouble.

While doing this, make sure that the landlord is not offended by your negotiation. If he is hurt or resists putting any sort of changes in writing, make him feel that you trust him or her completely but just want to be on a safer side and avoid any dispute in future.

In case you are put on the defensive by the landlord, do not argue with him or her. All you need to do is to remind your landlord about your qualifications like a good credit, history of timely rent payments, no disturbances, and no damage done to any property before.
